The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep...
(Robert Frost)

'2 miles to Glasgow' (Picture: Jamie Smith)'5 miles to Paisley, 25 miles to Greenock' (Picture: Jamie Smith)

Imagine, if you will, on a dark and stormy night, trudging, or riding, between Glasgow and Paisley, how welcome a site this milestone would have been.

Situated on Paisley Road West, at Ibrox, just east of the petrol station at the junction with Dumbreck Road, I must have passed it, and missed it, tens of thousands of times.

It was brought to my attention, last night, by LG follower Jamie Smith, who operates his film business opposite, in the converted bank on the corner of Merrick Gardens.

On one side it reads: '2 miles to Glasgow', while the other side reads '5 miles to paisley, 25 miles to Greenock'.

This morning, on the bus to work, I made sure I was sitting by a window, on the right side of the bus, to see it as I whizzed passed.

Odd how something so historic can sit right under your nose for so many years without it ever registering.

Checking the history books, apparently a building called 'Two Mile House' once sat nearby, built and later owned by the various railway companies. Wikipedia tells me it survived into the 1980s but, if it did, it made no impression on me.

I wonder how many more of these old, mossy, mile-markers still exist on the outskirts of the city. Over to you...
