There was a cinematic showdown in Sauchiehall Street in 1954, as the La Scala, right, faced off against the Gaumont, left.

At this time of year, when the #GFT hosts its annual festive screenings of the Frank Capra classic 'It's a Wonderful Life' (it runs until December 24), this picture always reminds me of the film's setting, the fictional town of Bedford Falls.

All you need, apart from a few trees, and a sprinkling of snow, is an overjoyed James Stewart, playing George Bailey, running down the middle of the road, shouting 'Merry Christmas' to all his friends and neighbours.

And, remember, every time a bell rings, an angel gets their wings...
