Young James Doherty was all revved up and ready to go in 1948, ready to take on the cream of the Gallowgate's road racers.

James, proud as Punch on his battered tricycle, was photographed in the now vanished Malvern Place.

No fancy Lyrca, cleated shoes, or helmet for him; it was shorts, scabby knees, and black sannies all the way, with snotters streaming from his beak as he took the tight, high-speed corners up on two wheels.
