With the clock ticking towards lunchtime, the city's sandwich shops will be gearing up for the usual midday deluge.

How much nicer, rather than dining at your desk, to take an hour out for a proper sit-down lunch.

The Ceylon Tea Centre, in Buchanan Street, offered just that, with a self-service tea bar, and a wide range of exotic sandwich and salad choices (their cream cakes were pretty good as well!).

Opened in 1961, above today's White Stuff shop, there was usually a queue of hungry diners right down the stairs all waiting on a free table.

If you were lucky, you might even be able to stump up for your feast using Luncheon Vouchers, provided by your employer.

After over a decade of serving hungry city workers, the Ceylon Tea Centre took its leave in the early 1970s.
